the soft corpse... (this is fiction)

While embalming today, I realized that the deceased was uncommonly soft. I kept revising the corpse and I noticed post-mortem puncture wounds in the main veins. That’s when I realized that this corpse had been previously embalmed. I called Dr. Wallis, the pathologist who examined the corpse before and he told me that he did not embalm. I kept asking my co-workers, the owner of the funeral home and many other employees but no one seem to know who had embalmed the body. All I know is that they had done a great job. I finished preparing the body, making it presentable and putting the final make-up touch ups before display. After two hours, I decide to ask Jonathan, one of my partners, to help me put the body on display.

The wake was at 2pm and there weren’t that many people. After the ceremony was finished and everybody left, I see Kristine. She’s the owner’s 13 year old daughter, and the human version of Emily Strange; she stands by me with a quill and a beautiful black notebook I gave her for her birthday. She stared at the body and then she turned to me and asked me: "So, how was I?” Right away I found the answer to my mystery. I was amused and also a bit freaked out. If her father finds out he will definitely send her to a reformatory like he has threatened before. Let me tell you that she has gotten in trouble many times for taking pictures or stealing our tools and even using our make-up. Regarding today’s behavior, I told her to never do it again and to go and play with dead animals or tie someone to her bed. After all at that age, that’s pretty much what I did. I can’t imagine what her father would have done if he found out.

It's incredible how nowadays these kids are so morbid and evolved than we were when growing up; although if I lived in a funeral home, I’d probably do the same as Kristine, or maybe become a corpse fucker. Ha! To bad they don’t allow cameras or cell phones in the chapel or the mortuary room. I would have had a blast already. Not like I don’t enjoy my job. It’s always a treat, or a disaster. lol

ta ta for now,

  1. Very interesting story, for being so short. The fact that your character ends up thinking about how strange they would be, makes them strange themselves. I see this is one of your first works; very well done.
